A course designed to develop health care specific knowledge able skills in effective communications, ethical and legal responsibilities client care, safety, first aid and CPR. This course prepares the student for the transition to clinical or work-based experience in health care. Students with a full unit in this course may waive the Health course (1/2 unit) required for graduation. For college credit information, see pages 14-20. The course cannot be entered at mid-term. | |

Health Science Technology II Tech
Prep Grades 10-12 2 credits Prerequisites: Health Science Technology I and Feeding Assistant Certification required, Biology and Chemistry recommended |
A course designed to provide for the development of multi-occupational knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will have hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skills development. During the fall semester students will participate in Texas Department of Health approved Nurse's Aide certification program. During the semester students will participate in clinical rotations at participation local health care facilities. Depending on space availability, a limited number of students may have the opportunity to participate in a sports medicine internship (see the HST II instructor for details). Note: Students enrolling in HST II may choose the Feeding Assistant Training at the end of the previous school year or immediately before the beginning of the Fall semester. The 18 hour training curse is six hours for three consecutive days. For college credit information, see pages 14-20 in the HS Program Guide. This course cannot be entered at mid- term. | |

Medical Terminology Grades 9-12 1/2 credit Prerequisites: None |
This course is designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. By relating terms to body systems, identify proper use of words in a medical environment. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student's ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in health care. Anatomy and Physiology of Human
Systems Grades 11-12 1 credit Prerequisites: Biology and Chemistry (may be taken concurrently) |
This course introduces the study of the structures and functions of the human body and body systems and the mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis. Topics include basic metabolism, cytology, histology and major organ systems of the body. Emphasis is placed on the integration of the integration of systems as they relate to normal health. This course will include laboratory investigation and field work using appropriate scientific inquiry methods and is designed for those students who will possibly pursue a career in sports medicine, nursing or other health related areas. Note: This course can count as the fourth year of science for graduation requirements for students entering 9th grade in 2007-08. | |

Forensic Science-Code Blue Grades 11-12 1/2 credit Prerequisites: Biology and Chemistry (may be taken concurrently) |
In this course students conduct laboratory investigations and fieldwork, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and problem solving. Students will study the relationships of micro-organisms to wellness and disease. They will develop knowledge and skills related to disease prevention by learning the chain of infection, asepsis, and standard precautions. Pathogenic and nonpathogenic organisms will identified to assist in the understanding of specific diseases, causative agents, and treatment options. Note: This course can count as the fourth year of science for graduation requirements for students entering 9th grade in 2007-08. | |

In this course students conduct laboratory investigations and fieldwork, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and problem solving. Students will study processes and how humans are affected. Emphasis is placed on prevention and treatment of diseases. Students will differentiate between normal and abnormal physiology. Note: This course can count as the fourth year of science for graduation requirements for students entering 9th grade in 2007-08. | |

Health Science Technology
Independent Study Grades 11-12 1 credit Prerequisites: Health Science Technology II |
This course is a project-based learning experience developed by a student or group of students and interdisciplinary mentor team. The project provides opportunities ford an in-depth study of at least one aspect of the health care industry. The student or group demonstrates the ability to utilize a variety of resources, advanced technology, and communication skills in the development and presentation of the project. Partial credit for one semester will only be granted for the spring semester. Students entering the fall will be expected to complete the full year for one credit. Certifications available include Phlebotomy and Medical Transcription. This course meets one of the "advanced measures" of the Distinguished Achievement Program. | |
